Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 is now rolling out to Pixel devices, arriving two weeks after the previous release. As of Friday afternoon, the Pixel 11 lineup is not yet compatible, though Google says support is coming “soon.”
Significantly, this build marks the point where Android 17 QPR2 reaches Platform Stability, meaning app-facing APIs and system behaviors are now finalized ahead of the wider public release. Beta 4 focuses heavily on stability and squashes a lengthy list of bugs across the Pixel experience.
Key Fixes for Battery, Audio, and Thermal Issues
Several of the most impactful corrections address everyday reliability. Google resolved a thermal management problem that caused devices to overheat and unexpectedly reboot during use. The update also fixes a battery quirk where the 80% charge limit optimization created excessive charge times during the final 2% threshold.
Audio handling received notable attention. Phone call audio previously defaulted to the phone speaker instead of connected Bluetooth devices, an issue now corrected. Google also fixed an audio service resource lock that could trigger during screen recording, blocking microphone access across apps and input methods such as Gboard and Gemini until the device was restarted.
Interface, Display, and Security Corrections
Numerous UI refinements are included. Searching for apps in the app drawer failed to process text input in some cases, and the notification shade could not always be pulled all the way down. Google addressed a Recents app switcher rendering bug where the first task card could intermittently freeze and clip behind other apps during horizontal scrolling.
Additional visual fixes cover a low-contrast dark mode issue that made the connected Wi-Fi settings cog icon barely visible, a missing background blur behind the navigation bar when opening the power menu via hardware buttons, and a plain fade replacing the power-button screen-off animation when turning off the display from the home screen. Enabling the “render apps below the cutout area” developer setting had also caused a transparent status bar and unresponsive gesture navigation, both now resolved.
On the security side, low-light Face Unlock failures previously bypassed Fingerprint Unlock and forced PIN entry, a behavior this build corrects. A WebGL fix addresses applications that could freeze or crash the browser process when combining shadow maps with vertex color attributes, resolving an invalid memory read in the PowerVR GPU driver’s texture state processing.
External display and wearable connections improved as well. Google fixed screen mirroring to external USB-C XR glasses and resolved a blank screen that appeared when enabling 3D mode on connected smart glasses.
Pixel owners can report problems through the Android Beta Feedback app, accessible from the app drawer or Quick Settings, or through the Android Beta community on Reddit.
