Sweden’s startup ecosystem has become one of the most closely watched in Europe, drawing attention from investors across the United States and beyond. The country that gave the world Spotify and Klarna is now producing a fresh wave of buzzy companies, including legal AI startup Legora and vibe-coding tool maker Lovable.

Sophia Bendz, a general partner at Cherry Ventures, recently offered an explanation for why the Nordic nation keeps generating standout companies: being a founder has become aspirational. When she worked at Spotify years ago, ambitious professionals gravitated toward banking or consulting. Today, she said, many people are optimizing for building things and pursuing both freedom and wealth.

Funding Momentum Returns

The numbers reflect renewed energy. According to Dealroom, the ecosystem has raised EUR 2 billion in funding this year and is projected to reach at least EUR 4 billion. That follows EUR 3 billion raised last year. Neither figure matches the EUR 7 billion raised in 2021, when the venture market ran especially hot before cooling off. The latest data suggests activity is heating back up again.

Beyond the headline names, other companies are emerging from the same environment. These include health screening startup Neko Health and autonomous freight company Einride, adding to a roster that continues to expand.

A Generation Mentoring the Next

Bendz pointed to a compounding effect driving the current wave. The first generation of Swedish entrepreneurs is now providing resources and mentorship to newer founders. In some cases, those veterans are becoming repeat founders themselves. Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek, for example, also founded Neko Health.

That cycle appears set to continue. Bendz noted that employees are leaving companies like Lovable to launch their own ventures after recognizing new opportunities built on the same technology. She said people who have worked at Lovable and Legora tend to be entrepreneurial and eager to start companies of their own.

American Investors Take Notice

The activity has not gone unnoticed abroad. Bendz said a growing number of American investors have been flying in to meet founders and offer term sheets. She framed the interest as evidence that the region is building strong companies and doing something right.

Sweden’s rise underscores how a mature tech scene can sustain itself: early winners fund and advise the next cohort, talent circulates between fast-growing startups, and international capital follows. With this year’s funding on pace to at least double from current levels, Stockholm has firmly established itself as one of Europe’s leading destinations for venture investment.
