Psilocybin may not simply throw the brain into disorder. In one of the largest neuroimaging studies on the compound to date, researchers found a hidden structure beneath the apparent chaos: while the drug blurs certain boundaries within the brain, our neurological responses to what we experience in the present moment actually become sharper.

The research, published in Nature, suggests that reality leaves a more distinct imprint on the brain during an intense psychedelic experience, rather than dissolving into randomness.

How the Study Was Conducted

Scientists tracked moment-by-moment activity across 332 regions of the brain using two measurement methods: functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). The 62 participants had no prior experience with psychedelics. Each took a 19-milligram oral capsule of psilocybin and then meditated, listened to music, or watched a movie.

Using artificial intelligence, the team identified distinct brain patterns for each activity. Surprisingly, the more intense the psilocybin experience, the clearer those neural signals became. Instead of getting lost in an unpredictable trip, participants’ brains registered a more defined imprint of what was happening around them.

What the Findings Reveal

The results appeared not only in the biological data but also in participants’ personal accounts. Those with the most defined patterns of brain activity tended to describe more intense feelings of immersion and unity with the world around them, sometimes reporting that the line between themselves and their environment felt blurred.

“Under psilocybin, brain networks that help us process our inner world and the world around us became less distinct, but reorganized into patterns that reflected what people were experiencing,” said Devon Stoliker, the study’s lead author and a researcher at Monash University’s School of Psychological Sciences in Melbourne, Australia.

Beyond offering a biological explanation for the sense of oneness many people describe during a psychedelic trip, the findings add nuance to the idea that psilocybin simply makes the brain “chaotic.” That distinction carries weight in the emerging field of psychedelic therapy.

Why Context Matters for Treatment

The research underscores that the setting of a psychedelic session plays an active role, not just a supporting one. “This shows that context is not just background to the psychedelic experience,” said Adeel Razi, a professor at Monash and the study’s senior author. “For treatment, that reinforces why the environment and what a person does and experiences during the psychedelic session matter.”

The study analyzed brain activity across 332 regions in 62 first-time psychedelic users who each received 19 milligrams of psilocybin.
