Motorola’s Android 17 update is now detailed, giving current owners a preview of what’s coming to their devices, even if the rollout timeline remains unclear. The company published a support page across all regions, including the US, outlining the key changes headed to its phones.
Among the additions are improved Live Updates, notification summaries, and Tap to Share support. But one of the most notable changes is that Motorola is finally adopting Android’s themed icons, a feature Google has offered since Android 12. Current Motorola devices, including the latest Razr foldables, have not supported themed icons natively until now.
Home Screen and Quick Settings Changes
With Android 17, Motorola phones will gain a new “Themed icons” section under Home settings, letting users apply an icon theme that coordinates with their overall look. Accessing it is simple: touch and hold a blank space on the home screen, then tap Home settings followed by Themed icons.
The update also introduces stackable widgets, which combine multiple widgets into a single block on the home screen. Rather than dedicating separate grid spaces to weather, calendar, battery, and music player, users can stack them and swipe to switch between each. Additionally, those using the Classic style for quick settings can now hide labels on the settings tiles to free up screen space.
Notification and Display Improvements
Motorola is bringing several notification upgrades. Live updates let apps display real-time, ongoing data by continuously updating a single snippet in the status bar or notifications instead of sending multiple alerts. Notification summaries provide a one-sentence overview of lengthy group chats or rapid threads from messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messages.
Notifications are now organized using machine learning to separate personal messages from automated alerts and clutter, bundling lower-priority items into quiet folders under the Silent section. The update also adds Enhanced HDR brightness control, allowing users to limit or turn off the automatic maximum brightness applied to HDR content such as Ultra HDR photos in Google Photos, HDR videos on YouTube, or HDR feeds on Instagram.
Which Devices Get It First
Motorola has not announced when the Android 17 rollout will begin. Existing flagships such as the Razr flip phones, Razr Fold, and the Motorola Signature internationally are expected to be first in line, with Moto G, Edge, and other lineups following later.
